Give each production observation a defined meaning.

Choose the identity level

Determine whether the identifier follows a finished unit, a work carrier, a batch, or a reusable fixture. These choices lead to different records. When a carrier is reused, its association with the previous work must end before new work is assigned. Avoid treating the presence of a carrier as proof that a particular operation has been completed.

Represent rework and split operations

Map the ordinary route and its exceptions before automating transitions. Production may split a batch, combine components, bypass a station, or return work for correction. Define which actions require operator confirmation and which observations merely update visibility. A simple forward-only sequence can lose meaning when real production takes another path.

Worked example: a reused carrier

Hypothetical example: carrier C7 arrives at a station after its previous unit has been unloaded. If the old association remains active, a new observation can incorrectly appear to move the old unit. Close the completed association, record the new assignment, and then evaluate the station event against that assignment. A correction should preserve the history rather than silently rewrite earlier events.

Keep tool presence separate from tool status

RFID can contribute to issue, return, and inventory of tooling. Calibration, maintenance, and release status still need an authoritative record. An observed tool may be present but unavailable for the planned job. Show the relevant status to the operator and define how exceptions are routed to the responsible owner.

Pilot a representative cell

Choose a cell with enough normal variation to test the proposed logic. Include metal fixtures, loaded trays, stacked containers, changeovers, and rework. Agree which system owns the production state and how a rejected event is corrected. Evaluate traceability of the transaction as well as capture performance before extending the pattern to another cell.
